Canaan’s Land sing and teach the American psalmody of the 18th century to the present day - vibrant, rhythmic, vigorous, hard-edged unaccompanied singing and exciting harmonies, in which hymns are sung as robustly as folk songs. The four voice parts sit facing each other around a hollow square; we sing for ourselves rather than for an audience, and every voice is welcome. The songs are written in "shaped notes" to assist sight reading, and we use repetition in teaching songs, so experienced and improving music readers or singers by ear can enjoy this lively singing.
We sing songs from The Sacred Harp (Denson edition 1991), Northern Harmony, Norumbega Harmony and New Essex Harmony, complemented by recent compositions in the same idiom. For 2019, as well as our old favourites, we have a new selection of songs from The Sacred Harp to introduce new and regular singers to a wide range of material, many of the songs well suited to beginners, plus some challenging pieces for later in the week!
For workshops, we provide loaner booklets, so there is no need to bring your own. We also have books for sale.
