SHAPE NOTE SINGING WITH CANAAN’S LAND 2019
Canaan’s Land shape note workshops are participatory and progressive, covering techniques and repertoire. You will also hear some of the history and traditions of shape note singing.
For 2019, as well as our old favourites, we have a new selection of songs from The Sacred Harp to introduce new and regular singers to a wide range of material, many of the songs well suited to beginners, plus some challenging pieces for later in the week!
In 2019, the Shape Note Workshop programme starts a day earlier than usual:
Sunday 4 August, 11.30am – 1.00pm, at Sidmouth C of E Primary School Hall, where we focus on singers new to shape note music and those who want to brush up on their shape note reading.
Monday to Thursday, Methodist Church, 9.30am - 11.00am. With daily recaps as needed, we learn new songs in the different styles of The Sacred Harp and other shape note books. We’ll build up the challenges as the week progresses, so expect a good work-out by Thursday!
Friday, Methodist Church, 9.30am - 12.30pm. A full morning Big Sing, an open singing run in the style of a traditional all-day singing, where you choose the songs, and lead them if you wish! The highlight of the week’s workshops, we also encourage experienced singers who have been doing other things at the Festival, or local singers who can only take one day away from work, to join us for a rousing session. All are welcome to come and listen to what we have been doing all week!
Loaner books provided. We also have books for sale.
As well as running the shape note workshops from Sunday to Thursday, and the Friday all-morning Big Sing, Canaan’s Land take part in the Start the Week concert in the Methodist Church on Saturday 3 August at 2.30pm, with The Weatherbury Quire and Peter Wilton.
